DVHdesigns Studio Tour & Bead Drilling Presentation
November 19 @ 6:45 pm - 8:30 pm
Speaker: David V. Horste
Presentation: David V. Horste of DVHdesigns will do a virtual tour of his lapidary studio, storage unit, and online sales office in this live Zoom presentation. He works out of ActiveSpace SE in Portland, Oregon. David will show you around his studio and give a brief explanation of all the equipment he uses for his lapidary work including diamond saws, grinding and sanding arbors, drilling stations, polishing units, and tumblers. He’ll demonstrate his bead drilling set up and show how he drills a few different materials. The tour will also include his adjacent storage closet and his upstairs office where he does his photography, photoshop, inventory, listing in his 4 online stores, and his shipping. See a bead maker and marketer in his element. David began a major cleaning and organization of his space in early June and will have before and after pics of his workspace!
Speaker Bio: David V. Horste of DVHdesigns has been a full-time lapidary artist in the Pacific Northwest since 1992. He learned stone cutting and silversmithing in his youth through classes at the Michigan Gem & Mineral Society. After graduating from the University of Michigan he worked as a silversmith for local art jewelers who introduced him to the arts and crafts scene. His work focuses on being a “muse” to jewelry & bead artists by creating one of a kind cabochons to be set in jewelry as well as focal beads for stringing. Materials used range from semi-precious stones & fossils to common materials like concrete, bowling balls, and “Fordite” (car paint overspray). Sculptural & wearable “Hearts of Stone” have been a major theme since the death of dear friend & apprentice Richard Waugh of an HIV related heart attack in 2001. His work is done with diamond saws, grinding wheels, sanding belts, and polishing wheels. He sells his work through internet marketing on eBay, Etsy, Amazon, his own web site, and direct sales. His studio is filled with rocks and gems from all over the world, ranging from familiar materials like turquoise and lapis lazuli to exotic things such as petrified dinosaur bone and fossil mammoth ivory. Stone cutting is a unique art in North America and it’s a very time consuming craft which requires tremendous patience and practice.
