Ralph McCaskey has been making art of one kind or another since childhood, learned flame-working in 1999, and began teaching at the The Crucible in 2009, and the Richmond Art Center in 2012. He has also done flame-working demonstrations at the Maker Faire and the Solano Stroll, for the past 10 years. Sculptural beads taking the shape of fish, insects or fantastical monsters are his specialty, he has also ventured into glassblowing; producing small vessels to which he often adds electroplating, eyeballs, semi-precious stones, crystals, feathers or any other found object that strikes his fancy. He is especially drawn to creative exploration, welcoming “the happy accident” as a way of discovering new forms and techniques.
Get ready for a totally hysterical presentation: With a slideshow and a few objects pulled from the vaults, Ralph will tell the origin story of Nightside Studios – including why it’s called that – and then take the audience on a brief historical journey through the world of beads, which will help to explain why he likes to use “locally available materials” – anything from bottle caps to bleached bones.
