An Evening with Laura McCabe

Speaker: Laura McCabe
Presentation: The use of eyes in jewelry is an age-old tradition and one usually associated with protection and good fortune. Since the late 1990s, I have incorporated these captivating objects into much of my beaded jewelry and sculpture. While the reception has been mixed, one thing is for certain: the eyes never cease to be a conversation piece!
In this presentation I will talk a bit about the history of eyes in jewelry, the art of glass eye making, and how I have come to incorporate them into my own work. I will present a range of images, including both historical pieces that illustrate the prevalence and importance of eye images in art as well as a portfolio of my own work from the late 1990s till now, demonstrating how I have incorporated this age old tradition into my own beadwork.
Biography: Laura McCabe is a primarily self-taught beadweaver with an education in historical costume reproduction and restoration and anthropology. She produces elaborately beaded body adornment and sculpture that combines native American, African, and Victorian beadweaving techniques with modern materials and color schemes.
She started Just Let Me Bead in 1995, at which time she sold her original designs to boutiques and museum shops. In 2002, she began teaching her art and continued to do so across the US and throughout the world until 202, at which time she transitioned to video teaching. She exhibits her work in national and international beadwork exhibitions, and continues to sell some of her finished work online.
