Speaker: Dr. Robert K. Liu In publishing Ornament for almost 50 years, I have handled innumerable necklaces and realize how important they are to the functioning of jewelry. Too often necklaces are left unworn due to poor clasps or fastening devices. I am especially acutely aware of clasps, as I am a jeweler who also makes necklaces. In this Zoom presentation, I present well-photographed images of ancient, ethnographic and contemporary jewelry that use clasps of all types, made of various materials. This lecture may expose the audience to clasps that they may not have been aware of; since many members of the Bead Society of Northern California make necklaces, they will both enjoy and perhaps benefit from this lecture.

Speaker Bio: Trained as an ethologist and ichthyologist, Robert K. Liu received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, where he worked on experimental gerontology in the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine. In 1975 he left biomedical research after founding The Bead Journal, which changed its title in 1978 to Ornament, a journal of personal adornment, which has been published for 49 years, mostly with wife and partner Carolyn Benesh and staff. In September 2020, we lost her at the end of that month, so it is now only Patrick and Robert at Ornament.

Self-trained as a jeweler and photographer, he is co-editor of Ornament and has written extensively on ancient, ethnographic and contemporary jewelry and personal adornment since 1974.

Over the past four decades, he has lectured extensively in the US, as well as the UK and PRC and given workshops on jewelry photography and jewelry making and published in 2014 The Photography of personal Adornment. He is also the author of Collectible Beads and has written over 785 articles or other publications, including on scale modeling, military technology and history and construction equipment. His latest book is on miniature naval ship models of WWII, published in 2021 in the UK.
