Presentation:
“The presentation will be a summary of my path as an artist and, more recently, my career in art. I’ll tell the story in pictures and examples of how I learned and incorporated the main techniques I’ve used and talk about where I see myself going next.
I’ll start with my foundational text, Little Bead Boxes, and move on through the beginning of college and my first self-designed box, on to the end of college and my first large scale sculpture. After a break of two years I came back and encountered the Contemporary Geometric Beadwork project, which taught me techniques that led to several incredibly generative years. After the COVID lockdown I made the transition to working full time as an artist and I am currently working towards a new body of work with the goal of a second solo show in 2027.”
Speaker Bio:
Erin Peña is a trans non-binary, Jewish beader based out of Minneapolis who creates geometric sculptures from beads and thread. Erin found beadweaving in their early teens and they love both the creative work of engineering a shape, and the meditative practice of beading itself. Every piece contains dozens of hours of patient hand stitching. Erin draws their inspiration both from mathematical forms and from the natural world, blending crystalline and organic structures. Erin’s work is their way of expressing their curiosity towards the world, of building a hands-on understanding of how the Universe fits together.
Erin is a recipient of the American Craft Council’s 2023 Emerging Artist Cohort Grant and the 2025 Early Career Artist Residency at Anderson Center in Red Wing.
