How are glass beads made? Connecting the international and historical perspective

February 20 @ 6:45 pm - 8:30 pm

Speaker: Floor Kaspers

The production of glass beads throughout history has always been done in very specific locations, such as Venice and Gablonz. Locations with access to glass (or the materials to make glass), skills and possibilities to trade the beads. This is no different today: glass beadmaking, especially in large quantities, is still a specialized activity, only done in a few places around the world.

In her presentation, Floor Kaspers will take you on a journey to those places and answer questions such as: Which glass techniques are modern? Which glass techniques have remained the same? How do beadmakers around the world solve the same problems? And is there a way to tell the difference between the old and the new?

You will get to see inside places, like a workshop of beadmakers in java, a lampwork studio in Venice and a seed bead factory in India.

Speaker Bio: Floor Kaspers is a bead researcher and bead and glass artist from the Netherlands. She has written several books on the history of bead production in Europe, in particular France, Czech Republic and Germany. They tell the story of a quickly disappearing industry that has produced beads and jewelry components that have traveled the world. Currently, she is documenting the lampwork production of beads in different countries connecting modern day artistry with glassmaking traditions.
